He’s frustrated and confused about what it means to be a celebrity now, but he’s not blaming the audience - he’s just not exactly sure how this relationship works now. He wants approval and wishes he didn’t want it so badly. He’s obsessed by it, worried about it, at once proud of what he’s accomplished and embarrassed by how much he wants everyone to think he’s great. Hart knows exactly how this all comes off: as a combination of anxiety and arrogance. And yet, here he is, standing in front of a fireplace and doing an hour of comedy for a small crowd, because something in him needs this. His career will not tank if he takes a year off, and he’s achieved a level of fame and financial success that means he could easily have set aside stand-up - heck, he could’ve set aside everything - for as long as he wanted. As he explains at the start, he and his family caught COVID months ago, but his potential immunity doesn’t make any of this cheaper or easier. For exactly the same reason that Hart can pull off a COVID-era comedy show in his own home and turn it into a Netflix special, he’s also the kind of celebrity who doesn’t have to do any of this. It’s also an elaborate, desperate display of neediness. The sheer fact of No F**ks Given is its own elaborate form of a brag. Not to mention, Hart has the space in his living room to put on a whole comedy show. Hart can get a stage with his name on it built in his own home, and he has the kind of Netflix pull to film an hour-long special in front of an audience at a time when the liability costs alone are mind-boggling. Its very existence is impressive and ostentatious. It is a mid-COVID stand-up special filmed indoors in Hart’s own home, on a stage built in his living room and in front of a small audience of masked and distanced observers.

And up to a point that's understandable, but now it's just borderline disrespectful to your fans. There are not many comics with the resources to put on a comedy special like Kevin Hart’s new Netflix special No F**ks Given. But now I'm thinking maybe you're just someone who'd do anything for cash.

If you're genuine on interviews then you're a cool guy and I wanted to like this. There's only so many chances people are gonna give you. Kevin, surely you have enough money, maybe it's time to start thinking about releasing things that are good instead. If anyone wants to actually laugh go watch Bill Burr or Patrice O'Neal. On this special he's an angry little man who's super afraid of doing any non-PC jokes yet somehow thinks destroying his own son in front of millions of people is okay. The real sad part is I saw Hart on Joe Rogan promoting this special and I thought 'okay, Kevin seems cool, intelligent, I can respect his determination' but evidently he's only determined to sell out and push as much things out as possible - quantity over quality. Not damaging your son's mental well being for life should be more important to you than getting our money. We get it, you're a terrible parent to him. Publicly shaming your son for money isn't really comedy. I sympathize for his son and everyone who paid god knows how much to watch this live. The other half is him getting visibly upset that the audience doesn't laugh as hard as he thinks they should at his terrible jokes. Half the special is him insulting his son while praising his daughter. I don't understand how some audience members were roaring with laughter- maybe there was a good vibe in the arena that night? A few parts here and there worked of course, but this is easily my least favourite special I've seen from Hart (insert unfunny pun about how maybe his Hart's no longer in it). On top of that, there's some more annoying repetition in his monopoly bit and his holidaying in Japan bit.

The gun compartment sketch was awful and just went on and on- almost so unfunny it became weirdly funny, but it Hart hadn't cracked up, I feel like no one would have been laughing. unless the comedian specifies "this is a true story," which Hart does more than once in this special. Jokes about family and wives and kids are pretty over splayed, and dull if you don't spin them in a unique way If I'm enjoying a standup special, I'll assume everything that sounds true is. While there are some small laughs to be had in the special's first half, it got pretty lousy in the second.
